missing the "slow" web

As my contact page mentions, I try to limit my time spent online. Especially when it comes to social media.

Once every few years, I have to do a detox. I delete all the apps and basically revert my phone to its stock state. No more endlessly scrolling Reddit, which always seems to make its way back into my life.

Despite going through this time and time again, I always end up back in the same spot: addicted to some dopamine-slinging website.

I've gotten to that point again, this time due to TikTok. I jumped on that platform super late, as a distraction from the grief of losing a pet unexpectedly last fall. It was a godsend during that period, but sucks hours away from me now, as if they were mere seconds, I'm sure to no one's surprise.

As I've been considering my next overdue social media detox, I stumbled upon RFC1855, thanks to the wonderful MichaƂ Sapka. It's such a wonderful read, describing the proper "netiquette" for and internet that moved much slower. Where interactions were more personal.

I crave that period of the internet, despite having missed it, as I was born in the mid-90s. I always come back to social media to stay connected, in some form. But the corporate-run internet sinks its hooks in and does its best to never let go.

I'm just so exhausted by it. If only we had slower, more genuine interactions. I fear I missed the glory days though, and they aren't coming back.
